Chapter Fifteen

Boone sat far too close to me as we huddled in front of the monitors at the security desk reviewing the footage the detective had a rushed warrant for. Dr. Yonan’s continuing protests only made my companion and sort-of partner all the more relaxed and benign, as though conflict and pushback increased his ability to relax instead of making things worse.

I wished I had his poise, the combination of anxiety over Thalia and Calliope being alone tied into the worry I was a horrible person even considering the young woman I adored could have killed someone wrapped in a hideous worry I was actually right.

Oh, and the closeness of the divine man next to me? Yeah, thanks for that added layer of stress, Universe. Being worked up and emotional while my hormones raged was exactly the way I wanted my night to go.

Though I wasn’t completely focused, it didn’t take a Ph.D. to figure out one of the cameras wasn’t functioning properly and another had somehow lost a large chunk of time right around the death of Asher Wyatt. Boone didn’t react to that fact, skimming through the footage while one of his uniforms stood by with the security guard to make sure she didn’t tamper with what we were doing.

“There,” I said, “that camera.” Boone paused the filming, the image one I recognized as the entry to the back hallway. “There’s nothing outside the back door to the greenhouse?”

He shook his head, pointing to the fuzzy screen. “According to our helpful friend over there,” he nodded toward the guard whose visible discomfort had her shifting from one foot to another while dabbing at sweat beading on her forehead and upper lip, “that camera went out a few days ago and hasn’t been fixed. And before you ask, the one near the exit by the stairs?” He flipped through that footage, the timestamp jumping by over an hour, showing Thalia, unfortunately, entering the greenhouse before the camera flickered and two EMTs appeared.

That was convenient.

Boone leaned back, fixing the guard with one of his easy, soft smiles. “Who has access to this desk?”

She shrugged, sweating harder, voice vibrating as she answered, her thin lips trembling, round cheeks glistening and pink. “Just me,” she said rather sharply, cutting the words off in a harsh tone.

“Then you are responsible for the lost footage?” Boone rocked back in the chair, eyebrows raised, more chastising high school teacher for losing her homework than a homicide detective on the trail of a possible killer.

“No!” She shook her head, both hands up. “I had nothing to do with anything.”

It was obvious to me she knew more than she was saying and before Boone could carry on with his reasonable questions, I interrupted. “Ms. Nanold,” I said, reading her nametag, Connie Nanold visible over her heart on the dark blue uniform shirt she wore, “is there access to these cameras outside of this desk?”

She hesitated, glancing away to where Dr. Yonan paced and complained to the other uniform holding him back from interfering.
